      BREAST SELF EXAMINATION

1.Stand in front of the mirror and look carefully for  any changes in  your breast

 What to look for:

  • Visible lumps of any size in the breast or armpits
  • A puckering, dimpling or tightening of the skin over the breast area
  • An unusual increase in the size of one breast
  • Enlargement of the glands
  • Orange peel appearance of the skin around the nipple
  • Unusual swelling in the armpit
  • One breast lower than the other. Nipples at different levels
  • Inversion or retraction of the nipple
  • Enlarged glands under the arms and shoulder area
  • Discharge from nipples

 

2. These pictures show how to check each breast.

  • Stand with one hand behind your head and using the flat part of your fingertips, gently examine your breasts in circular motion
  • Begin at point A and in a circular motion, follow the arrows to point B
  • Don't forget to check your armpit
  • Repeat with the other hand
  • Remember to feel all the parts of both breasts, this can also be done in the shower

 

 

  

 3. You can also lie down and put one arm behind your head.

  • With the other hand, check the opposite breast
  • Repeat on the opposite side
